Default garrisons & map hub
Garrisons decide whether your team can reinforce a fight or bleeds out walking from the next sector. Hell Let Loose players often keep screenshots, Discord pins, or wiki maps open on a second monitor. Arty & Garrisons HLL turns that into a dedicated map hub: pick a map, pick a side when the mode needs it, and open a full-screen reference built for glanceable use mid-match.
This guide explains the Default Garrisons section of the companion — available in the browser app and on Google Play / App Store.
What “default garrisons” means here
Default garrison references show commonly used or expected spawn / garrison positions for a given map layout so officers and squad leads can discuss placements with a shared picture. They are a reference aid, not an automatic win condition and not a substitute for reading the live map in-game. Enemy pressure, destroyed nodes, and your commander’s plan always override a static overlay.
The companion’s value is speed and clarity: one tap from a map grid to a large image, instead of searching a phone gallery while the sector timer runs down.
Using the map hub
- Open Default Garrisons (first tab in the bottom navigation).
- Scan the map grid — Carentan, Foy, Hill 400, El Alamein, and the rest of the supported set appear as labelled tiles.
- Tap the map you are playing.
- If the mode requires it, choose your side on the Choose your side screen (Offensive mode).
- Study the garrison overlay full-screen; pinch or scroll as your device allows, then switch back to the game to place or call the node.
On a phone, treat the companion as a quick check before you lock in a garrison. On a tablet next to your PC, leave the overlay visible while you talk in command chat so everyone argues about the same picture.
Offensive mode and side selection
In Offensive, attacker and defender care about different approaches and fallback lines. The app asks you to choose your side so the reference matches the faction viewpoint you actually need. Picking the wrong side is the most common self-inflicted mistake: you will stare at a perfectly clear image that answers the wrong question.
If your team swaps roles after a round, go back and re-select side before you trust the next overlay. The back control on the side screen returns you without forcing a full restart of the app.
How to use overlays under pressure
Good officers do not read an entire map like a novel during a firefight. Use a short checklist:
- Where can we safely put the next garrison relative to the active sector?
- Which approaches are obvious and therefore likely contested or camped?
- What is the fallback if the front node burns?
- Does infantry already have supplies / a truck path to that spot?
The overlay helps with the first two questions fastest. The last two still need live game sense. When in doubt, place a garrison your squad can actually reach and defend — a “perfect” wiki position that nobody can reinforce is worse than a slightly suboptimal node that keeps tickets flowing.
Pairing garrisons with artillery
Many sessions use both halves of the companion: map hub for officers, arty calc for gunners. If you are alone on a second device, switch tabs deliberately. Do not leave an artillery mils screen open when you are trying to call a garrison grid, and do not leave a garrison image open when you are dialling elevation. The bottom navigation exists so that switch is one tap — see the sister guide on the artillery calculator for the mils workflow.
Limitations and good etiquette
Map data and meta placements change when the game updates sectors, remove nodes, or shift the community’s preferred lines. Treat every overlay as a starting point. If your community has a house style for a map, follow that first. Do not harass teammates for ignoring a companion image; the tool is there to reduce friction, not to win arguments.
Arty & Garrisons HLL is an unofficial fan project. It is not affiliated with Team17, Black Matter, or Hell Let Loose. Use it alongside the official client, not instead of learning the in-game map.
